Dr Zoe Williams Reveals Life-Changing Impact of Spinal Surgery on This Morning
Dr Zoe Williams Shares Spinal Surgery Recovery on This Morning

This Morning's resident physician, Dr Zoe Williams, has candidly shared the profound and life-altering effects of undergoing major spinal surgery as she made her return to the ITV daytime show. The TV star, who confirmed earlier this month that she would be having the significant procedure after enduring years of chronic back pain, opened up about her diagnosis and the transformative journey of her recovery.

A Debilitating Condition Addressed

Dr Zoe had been suffering from severe spinal stenosis, a condition that involves the compression of spinal nerves, leading to intense and persistent discomfort. She revealed that recovering from the surgery has allowed her to fully grasp just how debilitating chronic pain can be. Sitting down with show hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, Dr Zoe expressed her newfound relief, stating, "I'm feeling great. I think you only realise how debilitating chronic pain is when you don't have it anymore. I feel lighter, I feel wonderful."

Remarkable Recovery Milestones

Despite the complexity of the open surgery, which she described as quite a substantial procedure, Dr Zoe managed to walk out of the hospital on the same day. She recounted a particularly uplifting moment: "The next day, when I got out of bed, was the first time that I've been able to stand fully straight for a long time, which felt great." This quick progress underscored the effectiveness of the surgical intervention in alleviating her symptoms.

Challenges and Mindset Shifts

However, the recovery process was not without its difficulties. Dr Zoe discussed the more challenging aspects, including her inability to engage in childcare and her dependence on her partner for daily tasks. She admitted, "It's frustrating as well. I couldn't do childcare; I was dependent upon my partner for everything. That's frustrating, and for somebody like me, that was really difficult, not being able to exercise."

Yet, she adopted a positive perspective, reframing the situation: "But, I shifted my mindset, I thought, when do you get the opportunity to sit at home for four weeks off work without anyone demanding anything and people have to do things for you? You don't have a choice." This mental adjustment helped her navigate the recovery period with resilience.

Social Media Updates and Surgeon's Insights

Following the surgery, Dr Zoe took to Instagram to update her followers, posting a photo of herself relaxing on the sofa with the caption, "I'm home and comfortable after my back surgery this afternoon. Will share lots more in the coming days." She also shared videos showcasing her ability to walk just an hour after the procedure, humorously noting a creaking sound as "just the knees clicking."

In another social media post, her surgeon, Mr. Akmal, confirmed that the operation "went really well," explaining that her nerve canal was severely compressed due to degenerative changes. He detailed, "The nerves were being literally … normally your nerve canal should be really circular but yours was kind of flat – so the nerves were being really compressed."

A Last Resort Decision

Dr Zoe had previously clarified that the surgery was a "last resort" after living with pain caused by spinal stenosis, a condition she described as involving severe narrowing of the spinal canal. She elaborated, "My diagnosis is of severe spinal stenosis and the surgery is called a lumbar decompression. The surgeon will be removing overgrown ligaments and bone which are a result of degenerative changes to my spine."

She emphasized that unlike sciatica, which often resolves over time, her condition was degenerative and likely to worsen without intervention. Having tried various treatments over two and a half years, she concluded, "Surgery really is a last resort for me having tried just about everything else."

Encouraging Informed Decisions

Dr Zoe encouraged her followers to stay updated on her journey through social media, where she planned to detail her preparation and recovery. She aimed to provide insight for others facing similar health dilemmas, stating, "It hasn’t been an easy journey or an easy decision, but I know that so many people out there face the same dilemmas and that’s why I’m hoping that my sharing will give some insight, and improve your ability to make informed decisions regarding your own back problems."

She also issued a caveat, reminding everyone that individual cases vary: "I must caveat out that every person is different. Every spinal problem is different and every type of surgery is different so please do not extrapolate my scenario directly to yours and take everything with a pinch of salt."

Reflecting on Past Health Scares

In a related context, Dr Zoe reflected on a previous health scare in 2024, when she was rushed to hospital with an abnormal heart rhythm, leading her to write an emergency will from her hospital bed. She shared on Instagram, "I got signed off by my cardiologist today… I'm OK. But I wasn't certain that I would be for a while!" This experience reinforced her appreciation for health and the importance of not taking it for granted.
