Australian Father's Desperate Fight After Motorbike Plunge in Philippines
An Australian family is urgently trying to raise $100,000 after their son sustained horrific injuries in a devastating motorbike crash while overseas. Daniel Rapa, a 40-year-old father of four, was riding home in Bohol, Philippines, in February when he drove into an open, excavated roadwork site that lacked proper warning signage.
Severe Spinal Injuries and Complex Surgery
Mr Rapa, who has been living intermittently in the Philippines for three years, was diagnosed with multiple head lacerations and a serious spinal cord contusion at the C5 level. The accident has left him with severe weakness in both legs, spasticity in his lower limbs, and a complete loss of finger movement.
His wife, Janice Rapa, explained to the Daily Mail that due to a shortage of qualified surgeons in Bohol, Daniel had to be urgently transferred to Cebu the following day. There, he underwent complex spinal decompression surgery, during which his C4 disc and C5 vertebra and disc were removed and replaced with a hip bone graft.
Complications and Ongoing Rehabilitation
Although the initial surgery was successful, a further complication arose shortly afterwards. "Only days later, Daniel developed pneumonia," Ms Rapa revealed. "He is currently battling fluid in his lungs and remains on high-strength intravenous antibiotics."
Despite these setbacks, Daniel is courageously undergoing daily rehabilitation from his hospital bed, determined to rebuild his strength and regain movement. "The first challenge is to be able to get Daniel from the hospital bed to a wheelchair," his wife said. "The immediate goal is to help him sit out of bed and transfer safely into a wheelchair so he can eventually be discharged and continue intensive rehabilitation."
Family's Emotional Appeal and Financial Struggle
Mr Rapa's mother, Cheryle, described how the accident has upturned their lives. "My world changed in an instant," she wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser. "As a mother, there is no greater pain than seeing your child lying in a hospital bed facing a long and uncertain road to recovery."
The family hopes to raise $100,000 to cover his surgery, medical bills, and other hospital costs. "The medical bills, ongoing care, medical transport and rehabilitation costs are overwhelming for our family," Cheryle explained. "As a mother, I am humbly asking for your help. I just want my son home safely."
Long-Term Goals and Family Support
The long-term objective is to bring Daniel back to Australia so he can access specialised spinal rehabilitation that offers him the best possible chance to walk again. Mr Rapa has four young boys aged two, four, eight, and 14, and his wife and children have remained by his bedside since the accident.
Cheryle emphasised that any donation, no matter how small, will help give her son the best possible chance to recover. She also urged those unable to donate to share the fundraiser and keep Daniel in their prayers.
