Anthea Turner's Shoulder Surgery Recovery After Pajama Fall Injury
Television presenter Anthea Turner has been spotted wearing a sling in London this week as she recovers from what she described as a 'nightmare' shoulder injury. The 65-year-old former Blue Peter star tore the tendons between her shoulder muscle and bone in a domestic accident at the end of December.
The Unfortunate Accident
The injury occurred in what might seem like an unlikely scenario. Anthea slipped on the back of her pajama bottoms while running downstairs on December 30th, resulting in significant damage to her shoulder. Despite the initial discomfort, she continued with planned travels to Paris for New Year's celebrations and later to Tanzania and Kilimanjaro before seeking proper medical attention.
Initially believing she was suffering from bursitis, Anthea consulted with her physiotherapist who referred her to a specialist. An MRI scan revealed the true extent of the damage: a completely torn rotator cuff with no threads remaining attached. This diagnosis necessitated immediate surgical intervention.
Successful Private Treatment
Anthea opted for private healthcare at The Wellington Hospital in London, where she underwent successful surgery to repair the torn tendons. She has since been recovering at home with what she humorously referred to as 'a party bag of killer drugs' to manage the considerable post-operative pain.
During a recent London outing, the television personality appeared in good spirits despite her injury. She cut a casual figure in a light blue plaid shirt paired with jeans, adding height to her frame with brown boots and completing her look with a simple silver necklace.
The Rehabilitation Journey
Anthea faces a challenging recovery period that will require significant rehabilitation effort. She must wear her sling for three weeks before beginning what she describes as 'gently working my t**'s off to rehab and strengthen my arm'. Her immediate concern, characteristically practical, was how she would manage to blow-dry her hair with the limited mobility.
The presenter has been documenting her recovery journey on social media, sharing photos of her injury and surgery aftermath. She has been open about the difficulties of adapting to using only her left hand, noting that putting on socks has become 'a nightmare' and she cannot even tie up her hair without assistance.
Support System and Personal Reflections
Anthea has expressed gratitude for her support network during this challenging time. She particularly thanked her millionaire fiancé Mark Armstrong for his assistance, though she humorously noted that 'friends are feeling far more sorry for him than me, I'm a terrible patient'. She also acknowledged her surgeon, Mr. Peter Reilly, for his successful work.
This health challenge comes as Anthea has recently reflected on her personal life, including her infamous 'Flake Gate' wedding to property developer Grant Bovey in 2000. During a television appearance, she discussed how her perspective on extravagant weddings has changed, preferring smaller ceremonies as large 'flash' weddings fall out of fashion.
Anthea became engaged to businessman Mark Armstrong in September 2019 after a whirlwind two-month romance but has not yet set a wedding date. Her recovery from shoulder surgery now takes precedence as she focuses on regaining full mobility and strength in her injured arm through dedicated rehabilitation efforts.
