Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden has shared an uplifting update about her future on the hit BBC show, confirming a surprise return for the grand final after undergoing a second mastectomy.
A Journey of Resilience and Recovery
The professional dancer, who was forced to sit out the current series to focus on her health, revealed she will be back on the ballroom floor this weekend. Amy Dowden was first diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2023 and received the welcome news in February 2024 that there were "no signs of the disease." However, she continued with preventative medical treatments.
Speaking recently on BBC's The One Show, Amy provided a health update, stating: "Three weeks ago yesterday, I had another mastectomy. The first week to 10 days, a bit rough, but every day feeling better and stronger." She was quick to reassure fans that this procedure was not due to a new cancer diagnosis.
The Road Back to the Dance Floor
Despite the physical challenges of recovery, the dancer's determination to return to her passion has never wavered. "I’m just itching now to go back on the dance floor when I’m fully recovered," she said. "Obviously, I’m not gonna rush it, but doing really well."
Her comeback plans became concrete after a consultation with her medical team. In a video shared from rehearsals, an elated Amy explained: "After advice from my consultant yesterday, I can be a part of the routine dance this week. As you know, I've missed it so so much."
She outlined the careful parameters for her participation, noting: "Obviously, I can't be lifted and I can't be lifting." Emphasising a gradual approach, she added, "I have to take everything so gradually and at a pace, because it has been six weeks now since my surgery. I am only going with my doctor's advice... But I am super, super happy and I don't care how small my part will be."
A Triumphant Finale Appearance
Amy's return is timed for the series' live final, an event she was desperate not to miss. "The grand final is always such a special week and it's so good to be a part of," she shared. "Everyone comes back, and there's a huge buzz and a lot of energy. So yeah, I really didn't want to miss out."
This series, Amy was originally paired with The Apprentice star Tom Skinner, but the couple were eliminated in the first week. Her focus then shifted entirely to her health. When announcing the decision for the second mastectomy earlier this year, she told fans her medical team was confident of a "straightforward recovery."
