Comedian Alan Davies has delivered a heartfelt update regarding his bladder cancer diagnosis in an emotional new interview scheduled for broadcast on The Jonathan Ross Show this Saturday. The 60-year-old entertainer disclosed that he received the bladder cancer diagnosis last year after noticing blood in his urine, and he has since leveraged his public platform to urge others experiencing similar symptoms to seek immediate medical evaluation.
Surgical Intervention and Positive Prognosis
Alan underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tumour, receiving a favourable prognosis at the time, though he characterised the experience as a 'close' call. While promoting his latest standup tour, he provided fans with a reassuring health update, stating clearly: 'I'm all clear now.'
He elaborated on his medical journey with characteristic humour, saying: '2024 I had bladder cancer. Luckily, little bit of blood in the toilet bowl and I saw it… to get that tumour out, they have to go... up the… So my advice is, if you're going to have a flexible cystoscopy… it's not very nice and it's not as bad as you think. That's accurate. They got it out, so phew.'
Tour Concerns and Audience Connection
The comedian admitted to initial doubts about whether audiences would attend his new standup show, currently touring across the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand. He observed: 'I didn’t know if anyone would come. It's a bit like having a party. But people did come, and a lot of them had grey hair and hadn’t been out for ages.'
His show, titled 'Think Ahead,' reflects his changed perspective following his health scare. Alan noted wryly: 'I'm going everywhere with the show. It’s called "Think Ahead", I have to now. I spend more time in the pharmacy than the gym.'
Using Humour to Address Difficult Topics
Alan explained that humour serves as a powerful mechanism for confronting challenging subjects, including illness and personal trauma. He revealed: 'I lost my mum, there's an abuse story with my father, which I didn't really confront until I was really in my 50s… This is the first stand up show where I've been able to talk about these difficult subjects… let's not have shame, let’s all talk, talk, talk.'
He described his comedic approach to serious material: 'You have to make it funny; very funny before it and really funny after it… weaving it into the thread of the show. If the show was a cake, this has got all the ingredients in. It’s a richer and better experience.'
Katherine Ryan's Personal Revelations
Alan was not the sole celebrity guest on Jonathan Ross's programme, sharing the spotlight with fellow comedian Katherine Ryan, 42. She offered updates about her personal life, confirming that her fourth child, born in October, will be her last.
Katherine reflected: 'You don't know you've had enough until you’ve had that one too many. I've maxed myself out… it's over. It is a miracle and I feel very blessed… it's really exciting to be done though.'
She appeared on the show to promote her new podcast, 'What's My Age Again?' which features celebrities discovering their biological age through comprehensive blood testing. Katherine shared her surprising results: 'Brace yourself, it was hurtful. I'm 42, my biological age is 77. It's almost over for me… there are a lot of really cool takeaways on the podcast. Cold plunges are really effective… I am taking magnesium now. I eat 30 plants a week…'
The Jonathan Ross Show airs on Saturday at 10pm on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
