Tragic Mum Dies After Routine Eye Test Reveals Silent Killer
Mum dies after eye test reveals brain aneurysm

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a seemingly healthy mother-of-two collapsed and died from a brain aneurysm just hours after visiting her optician complaining of headaches.

Claire Bridges, 42, had attended what she thought was a routine eye appointment where she mentioned suffering from persistent headaches. Tragically, within hours of returning home to Malton, North Yorkshire, she suffered a catastrophic brain bleed that would claim her life.

A Life Cut Short

Claire, described by her devastated family as "an amazing mum" and "the life and soul of every party," left behind two children and a loving husband, Simon Bridges. The healthcare assistant had no prior indication of the silent time bomb ticking away in her brain.

"She was fit and healthy, always active and looking after everyone else," her grieving husband Simon told the inquest. "We never imagined a headache could lead to something so devastating."

The Final Hours

On that fateful day in January, Claire visited her local opticians where she underwent standard eye tests and mentioned her headache symptoms. After returning home, she suddenly collapsed and was rushed to York Hospital.

Medical staff fought desperately to save her, but the damage from the massive brain aneurysm was too severe. She passed away surrounded by her heartbroken family on January 26th.

A Family's Warning to Others

The coroner's investigation concluded that Claire died from natural causes, specifically a subarachnoid haemorrhage caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm.

Her family now wants to raise awareness about the potential seriousness of headache symptoms and encourage others not to dismiss concerning changes in their health.

"If Claire's story makes just one person seek medical attention for persistent headaches, then some good may come from our tragedy," Simon said through tears. "We've been left with a huge hole in our lives, but we want to help prevent other families experiencing this pain."

Understanding Brain Aneurysms

Brain aneurysms are weak spots in blood vessels that can bulge and sometimes rupture without warning. While many people live with undetected aneurysms, a rupture causes bleeding in the brain that can be fatal within hours.

Common symptoms before rupture can include:

  • Sudden, severe headaches
  • Vision changes or double vision
  • Pain above or behind the eye
  • Numbness or weakness on one side of the face

The family has asked for privacy as they continue to grieve while establishing a new normal without their beloved wife and mother.
