A Tragic Journey to Florida
A 32-year-old British woman, Sonia Exelby from Portsmouth, Hampshire, was found dead in a Florida woodland after allegedly flying to the United States with the intention of being killed. Her body was discovered in a shallow grave in Marion Oaks just days after she failed to board her return flight to the UK on October 13.
The Suspect and the Allegations
American investigators have accused Dwain Hall, 53, of sexually abusing, torturing, and murdering Sonia. An autopsy confirmed she died from four stab wounds. Hall, who was arrested on November 17, now faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and unlawful use of a communication device, all of which he denies.
Officials allege that Sonia and Hall connected on a fetish website, where they discussed her desire to be killed. After she arrived in the US, Hall is said to have collected her from the airport and driven her to an Airbnb cabin.
Heartbreaking Change of Heart
Tragically, evidence suggests Sonia had a change of heart but felt trapped. Investigators found messages she sent to a friend on October 11 via Discord, stating, "He made it clear there was no way out unless I shot him". She expressed fear and regret, writing that she was "so scared" and "broken".
Police obtained footage allegedly showing a bruised Sonia being questioned by Hall about how she wanted to die. Detectives noted she appeared hesitant and upset. She told him she wanted to be stabbed.
According to arrest documents, Hall initially denied knowing Sonia but later admitted to picking her up. He claimed she was suicidal and had promised him $4,000 (£3,000) to help with his tax debt, but became angry when she arrived without the cash. He subsequently withdrew £900 from her UK bank account.
After her death, Hall allegedly sent a package to a friend in Ohio containing a seven-inch Tanto blade with Sonia's blood on it. A shovel with her DNA was also found in his garage.
During his first court appearance, Judge Laurie Cotton declared that no bond would be set, citing the large amount of evidence against him.
The Foreign Office has confirmed it is supporting Sonia's family and is in contact with authorities in Florida.
