Tragedy Strikes Sydney Family in Car Park Incident

A community in north Sydney is in mourning after a pregnant woman and her unborn baby were killed in a devastating crash. The incident occurred at the entrance to a car park on George Street in Hornsby at approximately 8pm on Friday.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The 33-year-old expectant mother, who was eight months pregnant, was walking with her husband and their three-year-old son when the tragedy unfolded. Reports indicate that a Kia Carnival had stopped to allow the family to cross while turning into the car park at Hornsby Railway Station.

At that moment, a white BMW, allegedly driven by a 19-year-old P-plate driver, collided with the rear of the stationary Kia. The impact caused the Kia to strike the pregnant woman.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Emergency services rushed to the scene and provided critical care to the woman before transporting her to Westmead Hospital. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical staff, neither the mother nor her baby survived.

NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Assistant Commissioner David Driver described the scene as "very confronting" for first responders. He stated, "It's particularly tragic when people pass away and indeed when there's children involved. This is a terrible, terrible story."

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The alleged driver, 19-year-old Aaron Papazoglu from Wahroonga, received hospital treatment before being discharged. Following an examination of dashcam footage, police arrested him at approximately 12.45am on Millewa Avenue in Wahroonga.

He has been charged with multiple offences, including:

  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Negligent driving resulting in death
  • Causing the loss of a foetus – death of a pregnant woman under Zoe's Law, legislation enacted three years ago

Papazoglu remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday. He faces a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years.
