For many expectant mothers, pregnancy represents a profoundly exciting and special chapter in life. Yet, it can also be a period brimming with unexpected surprises, particularly for first-time mothers navigating this transformative journey.
The Viral Revelation of Pregnancy's Impact on the Spine
Recently, a podcast clip featuring TikTok-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Betsy Grunch, known online as Lady Spine Doc, on Mel Robbins' show went viral. Dr. Grunch detailed the profound effects pregnancy has on the back, explaining that increased blood volume, weight gain, and ligament laxity create what she described as 'massive chaos' within the spine.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, back pain affects approximately 40 percent of pregnant women. This discomfort can be exacerbated by the baby's position; for instance, a fetus near the tailbone often intensifies the pain. In online discussions, many mothers concurred that their backs have 'never been the same' since childbirth, sparking widespread conversation about the lasting physical effects of pregnancy.
Beyond Morning Sickness: A Catalogue of Unexpected Symptoms
While classic signs like nausea are well-known, numerous other symptoms can completely shock new mothers. Following recent pregnancy announcements from public figures, Daily Mail consulted maternity nurse care advocates who disclosed a range of little-known experiences women may encounter.
Leslie Mora, MSN-Ed, RN, at WIN Fertility, emphasised that bodily changes extend far beyond common awareness. "Bodies change in so many ways during pregnancy and most people are aware of the swelling, mood swings, growing belly, but there are several things that happen to your body during pregnancy that many people aren't aware of!" Mora told Daily Mail.
She highlighted a heightened and altered sense of smell, where once-pleasing scents may seem repulsive, and previously disliked odours can become appealing. Other surprising symptoms include unexpected body hair growth in new areas, persistent itchy skin, and increased flatulence that "cannot be contained."
Lightning Crotch and Other Startling Sensations
Perhaps one of the most startling terms is 'lightning crotch,' often occurring in the third trimester. "Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like! You may be going about your day and suddenly feel what is like an electric zap to your girl parts," Mora revealed. While typically not a concern, she advises mentioning it to a healthcare provider for potential belly support assessment.
Laurie H. Lee, MSN, APRN-C at WIN Fertility, echoed the extent of bodily transformation, noting increased susceptibility to dizziness from overheating, crowds, or prolonged standing. "Listen to your body. Sit down or lie down when you feel dizzy. It may help to eat a snack or drink some water," Lee recommended.
Permanent Changes: From Feet to Abdominal Muscles
Lee also shared that feet can permanently increase in size post-pregnancy, beyond temporary swelling. "I was a size six-and-a-half before kids. Now, I am a size seven-and-a-half or eight," she disclosed, adding that mothers often reach a point where bending to put on shoes and breathing comfortably cannot be done simultaneously.
On a more serious note, Lee warned that pregnancy compromises the immune system, increasing infection risk during cold and flu season. Practising good hygiene, like frequent handwashing, is crucial.
Some changes may be lasting. "Some things will never truly be 'normal' again," Lee admitted. This includes 'mommy brain'—feelings of distraction or brain fog likely due to sleep deprivation, increased responsibilities, and brain remodelling that persists for years post-birth.
Abdominal muscles may also be permanently affected, with potential rectus diastasis (muscle separation) requiring physical therapy or surgery to correct.
The Positive Transformation
Despite these challenges, the journey is not without profound positives. "Of course, your heart will grow larger than you ever thought it could with love for your baby," Lee told Daily Mail, reminding expectant mothers of the emotional expansion that accompanies the physical changes.
