Cryptic Pregnancy Leads to Dramatic Toilet Birth for Young Mother
In a startling medical case, a young woman has recounted the harrowing experience of giving birth on her toilet, completely unaware she was pregnant due to a rare cryptic pregnancy. Mia Louise Bruce, now 22, delivered her 8lb 8oz daughter in this unexpected manner, despite having no visible baby bump and continuing to have regular menstrual cycles.
Months of Misdiagnosis and Unexplained Symptoms
Mia's ordeal began in 2022 when she was just 19 years old. She suffered a series of health issues, including a kidney infection, a chest infection, and a bout of Covid-19, which severely weakened her immune system. Throughout this period, she experienced persistent stomach problems, but multiple visits to healthcare professionals failed to identify pregnancy as a potential cause.
"I didn't have a bump, I got all my periods on the pill," Mia explained in a TikTok video detailing her experience. She even told her GP that her stomach felt "rock solid," but instead of pregnancy tests, she was screened for intolerances, allergies, and coeliac disease. Blood tests later revealed an iron deficiency, for which she was prescribed supplements, though she now believes she was already five to six months pregnant at that stage.
The Day of the Unexpected Labour
By May, Mia had started a new job in Coventry, still oblivious to her impending delivery. She recalls going to work in severe pain, mistaking it for the onset of her period. As the day progressed, the pain intensified, but she managed to complete her shift before returning home. That evening, the discomfort became unbearable.
"I was in so much pain I couldn’t even lift my head up," she said, describing hours spent immobilized on the sofa. Initially fearing appendicitis or severe constipation, her condition deteriorated to the point where her mother called NHS 111 for assistance.
The Shocking Birth and Immediate Aftermath
What followed was a life-altering event. Mia went to the toilet, believing she needed to relieve constipation, but instead went into labour. "I was pushing and pushing in agony, and then relief came out," she recounted. Moments later, she heard a noise. "I thought it was a cat... then I realised there was a baby in the toilet crying."
Her mother, expecting something far less dramatic, was confronted with a full-term newborn. Emergency services were called immediately, with paramedics confirming that both Mia and her newborn daughter had developed sepsis, a life-threatening condition. Multiple ambulances, paramedic cars, police, and even an air ambulance were dispatched to the scene.
Mia was critically ill, drifting in and out of consciousness, with her mother being told it was "touch and go." Paramedics administered fluids, antibiotics, and emergency treatment before transporting mother and baby to hospital separately. Upon arrival, Mia was met by dozens of doctors ready to provide urgent care.
Understanding Cryptic Pregnancies
Cryptic pregnancies, where an individual remains unaware of pregnancy until very late stages or even labour, are rare but medically recognised. They can occur due to various factors, such as:
- Continued bleeding mistaken for regular periods
- Lack of a visible baby bump
- Symptoms being attributed to other health conditions
In Mia's case, her continued use of the pill maintained her menstrual cycles, further masking the pregnancy. She has since urged others to trust their instincts regarding their health, especially if something feels amiss.
Life After the Trauma
Despite the traumatic birth and subsequent sepsis scare, Mia describes her daughter, now three years old, as "the best thing that’s ever happened" to her. Raising her child as a single parent, she says the experience has profoundly transformed her life, emphasising the importance of medical awareness and personal intuition in health matters.
