A newborn baby girl was discovered alive after being abandoned inside a toilet tank in a Bangkok office building, in a shocking incident that has prompted a police investigation.
Office Cleaner Makes Distressing Discovery
The infant was found on November 15 when a housekeeper cleaning the third floor of an office building in Bangkok's Lat Krabang district heard crying coming from the bathroom. Upon lifting the toilet lid, the worker made the shocking discovery of the newborn stuffed inside the container.
The toilet tank was half-filled with water, and the baby was believed to have been placed there shortly after birth. The infant was unclothed, and her hands had turned pale and wrinkled from soaking in the water.
Emergency Response and Medical Care
Police rushed to the scene at around 11 am local time after receiving an emergency report. The baby was immediately transported to Sirindhorn Hospital for a thorough medical examination.
Doctors confirmed the infant weighed six pounds and was unharmed despite her traumatic ordeal. Police Captain Kritsada Saikhong of Lat Krabang Police Station stated: "The baby girl was under a day old. She was a newborn but there was no sign of the mother."
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a full investigation to identify who abandoned the infant. Police Captain Kritsada Saikhong confirmed that officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the building to establish who was present and who used the bathroom around the time of the incident.
The parents could face prosecution under Thai Penal Code Section 306 for abandonment, which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 6,000 baht (approximately £140), or both.
This distressing case follows similar incidents globally, including earlier this year when sanitation workers in Rio de Janeiro rescued an abandoned newborn that fell out of a trash bag moments before it was due to be crushed.
