World's Busiest Trader Joe's to Close for Renovations

The Trader Joe's on Manhattan's Upper West Side, recognized by the company as its busiest store worldwide, is set to temporarily close for renovations starting May 17, with no confirmed reopening date. A sign posted outside the 72nd Street and Broadway location announced the closure, disappointing many New Yorkers.

Renovation Plans and Customer Impact

The store, which spans multiple levels including two main floors and an entrance level, is notorious for its extremely long lines that often snake through several sections. Regular shoppers hope the renovations will alleviate this congestion. The sign, shared by West Side Rag, read: "We promise not to be gone too long & will reopen as soon as we can. This is not a goodbye but a see you later!"

A Trader Joe's spokesperson told the outlet that the closure is expected to last "several months," though an exact reopening date has not been set. The renovations will include updates to refrigeration and vertical transportation, aimed at "improving the in-store experience for our customers and crew." During the closure, some staff will be reassigned to nearby stores.

Social Media Reactions

News of the closure sparked strong reactions on social media. One person lamented, "This is a catastrophe. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time." Another expressed hope: "I hope this fixes the line situation lol." A third complained, "The one on Columbus Ave is going to be so packed."

Store Features and Alternatives

Located two blocks from Central Park, the 72nd Street store is equipped with two elevators and four escalators, operating on a much larger scale than a typical Trader Joe's. In 2021, the company noted it has roughly three times as many checkout lanes and staff members to handle the consistently high volume of shoppers. "This may sound daunting, but to our Manhattan customers and Crew, it's just another neighborhood store," Trader Joe's said at the time.

There are seven or eight Trader Joe's locations in Manhattan. The closest alternative to the closing store is at 670 Columbus Ave, near West 93rd Street. Other options include the Upper East Side – Bridgemarket store on East 59th Street and the Chelsea location on 6th Avenue, though both are farther from the Upper West Side.

The Independent has contacted Trader Joe's for further comment.
