Barbra Streisand, the iconic singer and actress, has issued a health update after withdrawing from the Cannes Film Festival. At 84 years old, Streisand will not attend the festival's closing ceremony on 23 May, where she was scheduled to accept the honorary Palme d'Or award. Her absence is due to a knee injury, with doctors advising against travel.
Streisand's Statement
In a statement, Streisand expressed her deep honour at receiving the prestigious award and her regret at missing the event. 'I am deeply honoured to be awarded the honorary Palme d'Or, but I am devastated that I cannot be there to accept it in person,' she said. 'My doctors have advised me not to travel due to a knee injury, and I must follow their advice. I will miss the festival, my colleagues, and France dearly.'
Award to Be Bestowed Despite Absence
Despite her absence, the honorary Palme d'Or, which recognises her decades-long career in film, will still be presented to her. The festival organisers have confirmed that the award will be conferred in her absence, with plans for a future celebration.
Streisand joins a list of notable recipients who have been honoured at this year's festival. John Travolta and Peter Jackson also received honorary Palme d'Or awards during the event. The closing ceremony will also announce the main Palme d'Or winner for best film.
Streisand's career spans over six decades, with iconic roles in films such as 'Funny Girl', 'The Way We Were', and 'Yentl'. She has also directed and produced several films, earning numerous awards including two Academy Awards.
Fans and colleagues have expressed their support for Streisand, wishing her a speedy recovery. The festival continues to celebrate cinematic achievements, with the honorary awards highlighting the contributions of legendary figures in the industry.
