Rodent found at Royal Gwent Hospital prompts health response

A rodent was discovered at the Royal Gwent Hospital, prompting Environmental Health to attend the site. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board confirmed the incident took place on Thursday and said a thorough assessment has been carried out.

Health Board Response

The health board described the discovery as a "one off incident" and reassured patients, visitors and staff that there was no evidence of a wider infestation at the hospital.

A statement from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board read: "An isolated incident involving a rodent was identified within an area of the Royal Gwent Hospital."

Environmental Health Assessment

"As soon as the issue was reported, immediate action was taken and specialist advice was sought from Environmental Health, who attended the site to undertake a thorough assessment. Following their inspection, they are satisfied that this appears to be a one-off incident involving a rodent entering the building, rather than evidence of a wider infestation or ongoing concern within the hospital."

The health board added: "Environmental Health are content with the actions taken by the health board and have provided reassurance that appropriate measures are in place. As a precaution, additional checks and control measures have been implemented and will continue to be monitored closely."

Reassurance to Public

"We understand that reports of this nature may cause concern for patients, visitors and staff. We would like to reassure everyone that maintaining a safe, clean and hygienic environment is a priority for us. There are no further concerns at this time, and services continue to operate as normal."

The statement concluded: "We would like to thank staff for their prompt response and cooperation in managing the situation swiftly and appropriately."
