Hair Expert Warns Hot Weather Could Be Causing Hair Loss
Hair Expert Warns Hot Weather May Cause Hair Loss

Hair expert Sam Cinkir, CEO of Este Medical Group, has warned that excessive time in the summer heat could be causing hair loss. As UK temperatures frequently exceed 25°C, he urges Britons to take precautions to protect their hair.

Why Summer Heat Affects Hair

Higher temperatures lead to increased hair shedding compared to colder months. According to Cinkir, the body produces less melatonin during summer, while testosterone levels rise in both men and women. These factors put hair follicles into a natural shedding state for longer periods, raising the risk of hair loss. Dehydration further exacerbates damage, leaving strands prone to breakage and split ends.

Exposure to UV rays, heat, and perspiration can cause oil, dirt, and sweat buildup on the scalp, clogging follicles and leading to inflammation and hair loss. Cinkir recommends adding extra steps to your summer self-care routine to minimize damage.

Tips to Prevent Summer Hair Loss

Cinkir shares eight tips to protect hair during summer:

  • Get a haircut: A regular trim every six weeks prevents split ends and breakage.
  • Prioritise moisture: Use moisturising shampoo and conditioner to prevent dryness and brittleness.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner: Spray frequently, especially when outdoors or at the beach, to keep hair conditioned.
  • Never sleep with wet hair: Damp pillows can lead to scalp fungal infections and hair loss.
  • Wear the right hat: Choose breathable fabrics or hats with vents to allow air circulation.
  • Avoid heated hair devices: Air dry hair instead of using heat tools that can burn the scalp.
  • Have regular deep conditioning treatments: These intensely moisturise and prevent dry, weak locks.
  • Level-up your diet: Increase intake of protein and biotin from eggs, cottage cheese, and berries, which are rich in antioxidants that protect hair follicles.

Expert Advice

Cinkir stated: "The summer months can be a challenging time for hair, and many people experience some degree of damage or even hair loss. Firstly, greater exposure to sunlight means that your body is producing less melatonin, while there are also higher levels of testosterone – in both men and women – during the summer months." He added that all is not lost, as simple tricks like avoiding heated devices and ensuring proper nutrition can help. If hair shedding seems excessive, he advises consulting a doctor or medical professional.
