The government has confirmed that Winter Fuel Payments have started to land in the bank accounts of millions of pensioners across England and Wales, but has issued a stark warning to be vigilant against a surge in sophisticated fraud attempts.
Payment Schedule and Eligibility Details
Approximately nine million pensioners are set to receive the tax-free payment, which ranges from £100 to £300. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is making these payments automatically throughout November and December, with the vast majority of recipients expected to see the funds by mid-December.
The exact amount an individual receives depends on several factors, including their living situation, such as whether they are part of a couple, their eligibility for other benefits, and if they reside in a care home.
Government's Urgent Scam Alert
As the payments roll out, authorities are raising the alarm about criminals exploiting the situation. Fraudsters are posing as government officials or payment providers, sending deceptive text messages to trick pensioners into revealing sensitive personal and banking information.
The DWP emphasises that you will never be asked to provide bank details to receive your Winter Fuel Payment. If you receive a text inviting you to apply or confirm details, you are urged not to engage with it. Do not click on any links. Instead, forward the suspicious message to 7726, the free SMS service for reporting fraud.
Minister's Reassurance and Further Support
Pensions Minister Torsten Bell sought to reassure the public, stating: “From today, nine million pensioners across England and Wales will benefit from the Winter Fuel Payment hitting their bank account. Payments are being made automatically throughout November and December, so don’t worry if yours hasn’t arrived yet. But do remember to stay alert to scam texts.”
For those on low incomes, the government highlights that Pension Credit remains available, providing average support of around £4,300 per year. Additionally, pensioners with care needs can apply for Attendance Allowance, which can be worth up to £5,740 annually.
Any pensioner with questions about their eligibility, or who has not received their payment by 28 January 2026, is encouraged to contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre directly.
