Tony Christie on dementia: 'Music holds it back' as he tours at 82
Tony Christie reveals how music combats his dementia

Celebrated singer Tony Christie has given a remarkably open update on his health, sharing how he navigates life with dementia and the powerful role music plays in his daily routine.

Refusing to Feel Shame

The 82-year-old music icon, famous for hits like (Is This the Way to) Amarillo, went public with his diagnosis in January 2023. He revealed his wife, Sue, first noticed changes when he suddenly struggled with the crosswords he had always loved. After medical tests confirmed dementia, Christie made a conscious decision not to hide his condition.

"I came out publicly about my dementia because I'm not ashamed of it," Christie stated emphatically. He believes his openness has helped others, with many people approaching him to thank him for speaking out.

Music as Medicine

For Christie, music has become a vital therapeutic tool. He is currently touring and has more dates booked for next year, a routine he describes as essential. "Working absolutely keeps me focused and engaged. When I'm on stage, nothing else matters," he explained.

He revealed that his doctor told him he is fortunate to be in the music business, as "music is one of the best things for dementia. It holds it back." Christie sings every day, noting his voice remains strong and may have even improved with age.

A Positive Outlook and Purpose

Christie manages his condition with medication, which he says helps keep it under control, and a determinedly positive mindset. He urges anyone worried about their memory to seek an early diagnosis, as getting help promptly makes a significant difference.

His philosophy centres on family, music, and not taking himself too seriously. "I don't dwell on what I can't do anymore - I focus on what I can. I can still sing. I can still perform," he shared. He finds purpose in using his platform to help others, turning his diagnosis from a potential burden into a way to support families facing similar challenges.

This Christmas, Christie has partnered with the charity Music for Dementia for a poignant new advert titled 'Give the Music Back', which highlights music's profound impact on those living with dementia.
