Tony Christie on wife Sue's 'painful' fibromyalgia and his dementia battle
Tony Christie on wife's health battle and his dementia

Legendary singer Tony Christie has spoken candidly about the profound mutual support between him and his wife Sue as they navigate significant health challenges together. The 82-year-old music icon, who received a dementia diagnosis in January 2023, describes his spouse of over five decades as "my rock," while he supports her through her own long-term battle with fibromyalgia.

A Partnership Forged in Sheffield

The couple's enduring love story began in 1968 at a Sheffield nightclub where Tony was performing. He recalls telling his bass player, Mike, "That's the girl I'm going to marry" upon first seeing Sue. Now, more than half a century later, their bond is being tested and strengthened by health adversity. Tony revealed in an exclusive interview that humour has been the bedrock of their relationship, helping them face everything, including his dementia, together.

Navigating Health Challenges Together

Sue Christie has lived with fibromyalgia for several years. The NHS defines this as a long-term condition causing widespread pain, increased pain sensitivity, muscle stiffness, and sleep problems. Tony speaks openly about the reality of the condition, stating, "The pain can be terrible some days. It's a terrible condition."

Their support is a two-way street. "We support each other through the difficult days," Tony explained. "Sometimes the roles reverse - where she's helping me manage my dementia, and other times I'm helping her manage her fibromyalgia." He credits Sue with recognising the early signs of his cognitive changes and encouraging him to seek medical advice, a move that led to his diagnosis.

Music as Medicine and a New Campaign

Tony remains actively involved in music, which he and his doctors believe is crucial for managing his dementia. "I sing every day, it makes me feel alive," he shared, noting that his voice remains strong. He has partnered once again with the charity Music for Dementia for a poignant new festive campaign.

The campaign, titled 'Give the Music Back', is a powerful John Lewis-inspired advert demonstrating how music can dramatically improve the lives of those living with dementia and their families. Tony emphasised the medical benefit, quoting his doctor: "I'm very lucky to be in the music business because music is one of the best things for dementia. It holds it back."

Despite the challenges, Tony maintains a remarkably positive outlook. He focuses on his blessings: a lasting marriage, a family he adores, a career built on his musical gift, and the unwavering support of fans over six decades. His philosophy is simple: "I don't dwell on what I can't do anymore - I focus on what I can." For Tony and Sue Christie, facing life's trials with humour, love, and mutual support continues to be their greatest strength.
