Retired Brits Confront 500 Hours of Household Chores Annually
New research has uncovered that retired Brits are burdened with an average of 500 hours of household chores each year. This staggering figure translates to 21 full days annually, effectively serving as an unpaid part-time job that detracts from their leisure time.
The Breakdown of Chores and Time Investment
Instead of enjoying a relaxed retirement, many individuals over 55 find themselves weighed down by a relentless list of domestic duties. A study conducted by McCarthy & Stone, the UK's premier developer and manager of later life communities, indicates that retirees dedicate approximately 24 hours per week to household tasks.
Cooking and meal preparation consume an average of 10 hours weekly, while cleaning accounts for seven hours. Laundry takes up four hours, and gardening along with general home maintenance can require up to seven hours. When aggregated, this time investment rivals the effort needed to learn a new language, which typically demands 600 hours, or to develop drumming skills for a band, requiring around 500 hours.
Most Dreaded Chores and Alternative Pursuits
The most loathed chores are also the most common, with cleaning leading at 36% and ironing following closely at 31%. If freed from these daily obligations, a significant portion of over-55s would redirect their time toward more fulfilling activities. Specifically, 22% would spend more time with family, and 20% would explore new destinations and travel.
Hobbies such as hiking (29%), catching up on television (28%), and crafting (13%) would also see increased engagement. Additionally, many retirees express a desire to learn new skills; 10% are keen on acquiring a new language, 23% wish to devote more time to gardening, and 18% would take up practices like meditation, yoga, or Feng Shui. A more relaxed 22% would simply cherish the opportunity to 'be' and unwind.
