Choosing the ideal location for your golden years is a significant decision, and a fresh financial analysis has pinpointed five standout American cities that offer the perfect blend of affordability, healthcare, and lifestyle for retirees.
Sunshine State Reigns Supreme for Retirees
The study, conducted by personal finance website WalletHub in September 2025, evaluated over 180 cities across 45 key metrics. The findings underscore Florida's enduring appeal for older Americans. In 2023 alone, Florida saw a net influx of 44,504 people aged 60 and over, according to U.S. Census data analysed by SmartAsset.
The Top Five Retirement Destinations
Orlando, Florida clinched the top spot. Its major draws are a complete lack of state taxes and excellent access to quality geriatric medical care. WalletHub's financial writer, Adam McCann, also highlighted the city's wealth of activities, noting an "especially high number of music venues, fishing facilities, art galleries and adult volunteer activities."
In second place is Scottsdale, Arizona. Mirroring Florida's tax benefits, Arizona imposes no income, estate, or inheritance taxes. Retirees there enjoy a rich cultural scene, with the city ranking highly for adult volunteer opportunities, art galleries, and public golf courses per capita.
The third choice may come as a surprise: Minneapolis, Minnesota. While not the stereotypical warm-weather retreat, it's ideal for retirees seeking part-time work. Over 22% of the working population in Minneapolis is over 65, thanks to a prevalence of jobs suitable for older adults.
Miami, Florida secured fourth position, scoring well on affordability and overall quality of life measures. Rounding out the list in fifth is Tampa, Florida, praised primarily for its high-quality healthcare infrastructure.
Expert Advice for a Secure Retirement
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo emphasised the importance of a prudent choice. "Many retirees are on a fixed income," he stated. "As a result, the best cities are those that minimise taxes and expenses, have good opportunities for paid work if desired, provide high-quality health care, and offer plenty of enjoyable activities."
This analysis, published on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, offers a data-driven starting point for older Americans planning their next chapter, balancing practical financial concerns with the promise of an active and engaging lifestyle.
