Professor Green, whose real name is Stephen Manderson, has shared a candid health update with fans, revealing that his bowel hernia has returned after nine years. The 42-year-old singer posted photos on Instagram showing his bowel 'poking out,' marking a recurrence of the condition that previously required surgery.
Previous Surgery and Current Recurrence
In 2017, Professor Green underwent a five-and-a-half-hour operation to remove three hernias. Now, nearly a decade later, the hernia has returned. Alongside the images, he wrote: 'Violins everywhere, tiny ones. Life's been a lot lately… I've learned I'm not totally free from historic patterns, and in almost the same breath learned I catch things well before I ever did previously, and am (on good days) able to observe my thoughts spiralling without spiralling with them.'
Emotional Reflection
He continued: 'This hernia recurrence happened yesterday, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a weight I could do without given everything else health wise that's going on… out of my control though. It's the only time any of us have here and we do, if we take responsibility, have the choice to embrace whatever our experience may be. Working on doing just that, and feeling my way through things best I can… I'm playing the next single tonight, tomorrow, all through the example tour and at every show till it drops. Here we go again.'
His ex-girlfriend Karima McAdams expressed concern, commenting: 'I can't believe you posted this. Be careful tonight Stevie x.'
Rare Health Condition: Schwannomatosis
The singer recently revealed he is battling Schwannomatosis, a rare condition that causes multiple benign tumours. He listed his ailments including ADHD, Autism, Pyloric Stenosis, and Factor IX deficiency. He shared that he had 'superficial but painful' growths removed from his head and neck, and doctors discovered a tumour behind his left eye and three along his spine.
He posted a photo with the caption: 'If only genes came on hangers and you could choose your perfect fit.' In a longer post, he explained: 'The combo of my parents handed me ADHD, Autism, Pyloric Stenosis, Factor Vii deficiency and the latest addition: Schwannomatosis. My nerve sheath tumours are thankfully benign, but chronic and not without complications - some more than others depending on their location.'
Spinal and Eye Tumours
He added: 'After four relatively superficial but painful growths were removed from my head and neck, I've now found out I have one behind my left eye and three along my spine: two smaller lesions at t5 and t6, and one the size of a blemmin' lime around my s2 nerve.'
Reflecting on the emotional toll, he wrote: 'After a good few weeks of worrying about whether or not they were benign or malignant, I feel as though as painful as this is (I thought it was 'just' worsening sciatica), the trauma I went through in my head living out worst case scenario's was worse. I've come to a place of acceptance - this is how I'll experience life, there's no way around it, and that's okay.'
Mental Health and Hyper-Interoception
The rapper also discussed his mental health: 'It's hard knowing what's owing to what sometimes - is the physical pain causing mental anguish, or is my mental load manifesting physically? Again, it's probably not worth too much thought. I likely suffer hyper-interoception; an overactive ability to feel internal sensations, which I've only found out about post autism diagnosis. It's helped me make sense of a lot… and allowed me to pull my focus away from it when I realise I'm becoming obsessive.'
He concluded: 'It's an intense experience, but it's mine, and it's the only one I'll ever know. Working towards 'not everything is okay, but I am' and doing better some days than I am others but working with whatever I have on any given day. To anyone suffering with anything chronic - I see, hear and feel you! Back to programming as usual.'
Reconnection with Ex-Wife Millie Mackintosh
Professor Green also shared that he has reconnected with his ex-wife Millie Mackintosh after their bitter split. The former couple, who ended their three-year marriage in 2016, bonded over their shared ADHD diagnoses later in life. He told the Sun: 'We spoke when she was releasing a book about her being sober and it was a really respectful thing to do. It was very cordial, it was over email. We laughed a little bit going 'you're ADHD… me too'.'
