Binge-watching television in middle age could have major health implications decades later, a major US study has warned. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University found that adults who reported watching television "very often" during their mid-50s showed reduced brain volumes in key areas linked to memory, decision-making, and visual processing more than 20 years on.
They also had greater white matter damage – a marker of small vessel disease associated with cognitive decline, stroke risk, and dementia. The findings, published in Brain and Behavior, come from brain MRI scans of around 1,700 participants in the long-running Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study.
Brain structure changes
Those who watched TV frequently had smaller frontal and occipital lobes, as well as changes in regions tied to early Alzheimer's disease. The harm appears tied to passive TV watching rather than sitting itself. People who spent long hours seated at mentally stimulating jobs actually showed healthier brain patterns, with larger frontal and occipital lobes and less white matter damage.
Senior author Professor David Raichlen of USC Dornsife said: "For years we've focused on how much people sit. Our findings suggest we should also pay attention to what they're doing while they're sitting."

Corresponding author Natan Feter added that health advice may need updating: "Experts should encourage people not only to sit less, but to choose more mentally engaging activities when they do sit."
Stronger effects in men
The brain changes were more pronounced in men, suggesting they may be particularly vulnerable, though more research is needed. The study controlled for physical activity, diabetes, BMI, smoking, and alcohol use, strengthening the link to TV habits. However, limitations include self-reported viewing data and the lack of baseline brain scans.
The results echo the old parental warning about TV "rotting your brain"—an exaggeration, but one that now carries scientific weight. Binge-watching marathons in midlife may come at a hidden long-term cost to brain health.
Experts say the message is clear: swap passive screen time for more active or stimulating pursuits to help protect your grey matter in later life.
