A 14-year-old Londoner has been closely observing a family of foxes from her bedroom window, documenting their daily habits and the changing dynamics as the cubs prepare to leave home. In a diary entry for the Young Country Diary series, Julia describes a 15-minute observation session where the fox spent most of the time sleeping, with brief interludes of activity.
Urban foxes often find shelter in gardens, under sheds, in bushes, or behind bins. Julia notes that in spring, baby foxes are born and often watch gardeners from the bushes. Although she knows she should clap to scare them away, she finds peace in gardening while the cubs grow bold, their amber eyes watching her.
The cubs are now about seven months old and ready to leave home to establish their own territories. Julia explains that parents may become aggressive to drive them away. While her mother views the foxes as pests due to mess and droppings, Julia advises clearing away pet food and sealing bins to deter them.
Julia concludes that she will continue to watch from her window, maintaining her quiet vigil over the urban foxes.
