Mona, a Dutch shepherd mix, is recovering from severe anaemia caused by starvation and malnutrition, and is now searching for a new home in the UK after six years of mistreatment.
Formerly known as Iris, Mona was discovered abandoned amongst rubbish with her littermates, her ears already severed and weighing just 12kg. She was adopted by a couple who later transferred her to a family member, but there were no inspections, no official handover, and nobody was answerable for her care.
The person who assumed responsibility for Mona abandoned her, eventually driving her away. She was later found lying defenceless in the dirt beside a road, so frail she could not manage even one step.
Rescue and recovery
A compassionate Greek holidaymaker noticed her and immediately took her to a veterinary surgery, where she secured temporary care. Medical examinations showed Mona was experiencing acute anaemia resulting from extreme hunger and extended malnutrition.
Aged approximately six years old, Mona is now safely in the care of the Zophoros Animal Welfare Association in Greece. Despite all she has endured, she is described as calm, tender, compassionate and profoundly loving.
She interacts well with both humans and fellow animals and, despite her appalling history, has shown no bitterness towards those around her.
Gaining strength and seeking a home
Mona is now putting on weight and building strength, currently weighing approximately 15kg. She has received her vaccinations, been microchipped and dewormed, and is awaiting her spaying procedure.
The rescue organisation hopes she can finally secure the devoted home that has eluded her throughout the first six years of her life. Mona is currently based in Greece, with transport available to Piraeus and onward to the UK and various European destinations.
She is also listed on the official Greek Pet Adoption Gateway, giving prospective adopters access to her information and the opportunity to learn more about her story. Following all that Mona has been through, she deserves nothing less than a secure home where she can finally know the affection and attention that should have been hers from the beginning.
