A rescue dog who endured years of severe neglect is finally recovering and hoping to find a loving home. Mona, a Dutch shepherd mix formerly registered as Iris, was found dumped in rubbish alongside her siblings, with her ears already cut off and weighing just 12kg.
Six Years of Neglect
Mona was taken in by a couple who later passed her on to a relative, but there were no checks, no formal transfer, and ultimately no one held accountable for her welfare. The person who took Mona in neglected her until he eventually drove her away.
She was later discovered lying helpless in the dirt at the side of the road, so weak that she couldn't take a single step. A kind Greek tourist spotted her and rushed her to a vet before arranging foster care.
Recovery and Care
Tests revealed that Mona was suffering from severe anaemia caused by extreme starvation and prolonged malnutrition. Now around six years old, she is safely recovering under the care of the Zophoros Animal Welfare Association in Greece.
Despite everything she has been through, she is described as peaceful, gentle, kind and deeply affectionate. She gets along wonderfully with people and other animals and has shown no resentment towards those around her.
Ready for a New Home
Mona is now gaining weight and strength and weighs around 15kg. She has been vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed, and is preparing for her spay operation. The rescue hopes she can finally find the loving home she has been denied for the first six years of her life.
Mona is currently in Greece, with travel available to Piraeus and eligible transport to the UK and other parts of Europe. She is also registered on the official Greek Pet Adoption Gateway, giving potential adopters a way to find her details and learn more about her.
After everything Mona has endured, she deserves nothing more than a safe home where she can finally experience the love and care she should have had all along. If you're interested in adopting Mona, or any other dogs in need, contact Greek Stray ResQ via their website greekstrayrescue.com.
