RSPB: Three foods to feed garden birds safely in September

Gardeners hoping to attract birds this September should put out three specific foods, according to the RSPB. The charity advises feeding mealworms, fatballs and suet between May 1 and October 31, as these protein-rich options can help improve chick survival rates.

Why these foods are recommended

During summer and autumn, natural food sources such as seeds and insects are readily available, meaning birds require less supplementary feeding. The RSPB also notes that finches are less drawn to fat and suet, which is likely to reduce the risk of disease transmission.

The charity warned that disease poses a significant threat to birds, making it essential to follow its guidance. It said: "During summer and autumn, there's a higher risk of disease spreading. But it's also when there are more natural foods available to birds, such as seeds and insects."

Feeding birds safely

Once November arrives, a complete range of foods, including seeds and peanuts, can be offered, continuing through until the end of April. To feed birds safely, the RSPB advises keeping food dry and using hanging feeders rather than flat ones. Feeders should be cleaned weekly and water changed daily.

The RSPB said: "Research has shown a worrying decline in some of our much-loved garden birds due to a disease called trichomonosis. This is a highly contagious disease and can spread where birds gather in large numbers such as at bird feeders." Moving feeders to a different location each week can help prevent contaminated debris from accumulating underneath, and feeders should be kept away from roosting spots such as trees.
