Roo, a two-year-old pitbull who ran away from home, was first spotted by Caltrain operators inside the tunnel on his first day there. Seeing the dog lying motionless, they assumed he had been fatally struck by a train, according to a recent social media post from the San Francisco animal care and control shelter.
On the second day, after Roo was seen moving, police officers entered the tunnel on foot with a flashlight. They found the dog curled up next to a rail track and led him out of the dark into the daylight.
Rescue and reaction
"He was terrified at first, then was thrilled to be rescued," the shelter wrote in the post. The pup, a recent adoptee, had run away after being "spooked".
Fortunately, Roo was microchipped, and he has since been reunited with his owner.
