Philips Park: Manchester's historic autumn escape praised

Philips Park in east Manchester has been highlighted as an ideal destination for an autumn walk, offering a green escape from the city centre. The Grade-II listed park, located in the River Medlock valley, is close to the Etihad Stadium, Co-op Live, and the Medlock Square development.

A historic park with original features

Covering 31 acres, Philips Park is one of Manchester's oldest public parks, having opened in 1846. It was among the world's first municipal parks, created largely due to the efforts of MP Mark Philips, who lobbied for parks for the city's working people. The park was an instant success and remains popular, receiving Grade-II listed status in 2001.

Many of its original historic features survive, including the carriage drive, serpentine paths, amphitheatre, and the Head Gardener's House. It also has a children's play area, basketball courts, a pond, and a BMX track.

Wildlife and autumn colours

Despite its proximity to the city, the park feels a world away, serving as a haven for wildlife thanks to its woodland, pond, and the River Medlock. Several paths wind through the park, lined with trees that display autumn colours during the season. For longer walks, the park connects to Clayton Vale, a nature reserve along the River Medlock.

Visitors have praised the park. Alaya Petrova wrote on Google Reviews: “I spent a bit of time at Philips Park recently, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite escapes in Manchester. It’s tucked away right behind the Etihad Stadium, but once you step inside, the city noise just disappears.”

Petrova added: “What I really liked about it is how it doesn't feel like a flat, boring park; it’s full of steep little dips and hidden paths that lead down to the River Medlock. I went on a slightly misty morning, and the wooded areas felt properly wild—I almost forgot I was a ten-minute tram ride from the city centre.”

Another visitor, Trevi Yeung, wrote: “Very lovely park to go to, whether it's for walking around or running. I've been here so many times I've lost count. Philips Park certainly is very spacious and is being kept in a very nice condition.”

Philips Park is located on Stuart Street, Manchester M11 4DQ.
