Missing Indiana Tortoise Found After 700-Mile Journey Home

A 66-pound Sulcata tortoise named Emma has been reunited with her owner in Indiana after being found wandering along a street in Indianapolis. The reptile was spotted on Wednesday making her way down English Road near Fountain Square, prompting a search for her owner.

Emma was taken to St Francis Pet Hospital in Camby, where veterinarian Dr Jessica Cox examined her. Cox noted that Sulcata tortoises can live up to 150 years and weigh over 100 pounds, and that Emma would not have survived if not found.

Fox 59 morning news anchor Angela Ganote helped spread the word on social media, sharing photos of the tortoise. The owner was able to provide proof of ownership, including photos and Ring video footage showing the man who found Emma.

The owner explained that an Amazon driver had left her gate open, allowing Emma to escape. The animal hospital thanked the community for using Facebook to reunite the pet with its owner, calling it a positive use of social media.
