Marine conservationists have captured footage of a 'superpod' of hundreds of dolphins in the Irish Sea. The remarkable sighting occurred during a routine survey by the Pembrokeshire-based Sea Trust group.
The team was conducting its monthly survey aboard a Fishguard to Rosslare ferry when common dolphins were spotted leaping from the water. Sea Trust director Cliff Benson described the sea as 'boiling' with dolphins in an 'amazing' sight.
About 10 miles off the Irish coast heading towards Fishguard, the group encountered the superpod. Benson noted the sunny day and flat, blue sea. He estimated at least 250 dolphins, with a conservative guess of up to 500.
Although dolphin sightings are more common in warmer months, Sea Trust has observed them year-round since 2009. Benson expressed surprise at the winter sighting, calling it 'mind-blowing'.
