A tourist beach in Spain was evacuated after a 6ft 6in (2-metre) shark was seen prowling the shoreline, just feet from where people were bathing. The incident occurred at La Reya Beach in Puerto de Mazarrón near Murcia last Thursday.
Lifeguards warned beachgoers to keep a safe distance as an emergency services boat was dispatched. The crew managed to coax the shark away from shallow water and back out to sea. Onlookers filmed the predator with their phones, with one local describing it as “a huge beast.”
The clip was shared on TikTok, where it garnered 940,000 views. Marine experts identified the shark as a blue shark, which does not normally attack humans. Local sightings may be caused by strong currents, disorientation, injury, or the animal searching for food.
Authorities advised residents to calmly leave the water if they sight a shark and immediately notify lifeguards or emergency services. Spain is a popular holiday destination for Britons, with up to 17 million visiting each year.
