A woman has shared the remarkable transformation of her betta fish, Tank Sinatra, after moving it from a tiny shop tank to a properly cared-for home aquarium. The video, posted online, shows the stark contrast between the fish's dull, lethargic appearance and its vibrant, active state after the upgrade.
Before the move, Tank was pale in colour with lacklustre fins, staying in one spot and looking unhappy. The owner noted a common misconception that betta fish can thrive in small cups without filters or heaters, but this neglect leaves them stressed and colourless.
After being transferred to a spacious tank with heaters, filters and decorations, Tank flourished. His fins expanded to more than double their size, and his colour deepened to a rich red with blue accents. He actively explored his new environment, swimming through fish houses and greenery.
The owner explained: 'Betta fish change colour when they're happy (or stressed). It's safe to say Tank is a very happy guy.' Proper water quality, stable temperature and lighting are key to bringing out their bright pigments.
Commenters shared their own experiences, with one noting that bettas naturally inhabit deep rice paddy fields, not puddles. Another admitted they had previously kept bettas in tiny containers, but now understand that surviving is not the same as thriving. Experts recommend at least a one-gallon tank for a single betta, with space to breathe at the surface.
