A monkey was filmed passed out on a box of booze after entering a liquor store and getting drunk. The incident took place in the Indian town of Ormanjhi earlier this month.
Shop staff initially tried to drive the animal away and offered it biscuits, but the monkey was after something stronger and drained a liquor bottle. Local reports say the animal had entered the shop one day earlier and attacked staff who tried to drive it away.
Crowd gathers as monkey sleeps on bottles
A crowd gathered around the shop, with footage showing the monkey out cold on top of a bed made of spirit bottles. A rescue team was called to the premises to help the animal, which eventually woke up and hobbled off.
Social media reacts
In a post of the clip on Instagram, some people argued the monkey should have been “arrested” after its actions. Another person joked: “How did you get this footage of me?!” One person suggested: “Perhaps it's been drinking Monkey Shoulder,” referencing the popular whiskey brand.
Some people defended the monkey, saying it had probably just had a hard day’s work and “just wanted a break. Leave him be bro.”
Previous monkey incidents
It is not the first time apes have been caught drinking. In 2023, a drunk monkey in Nepal attacked 4,000 people in three months after drinking alcohol with locals. The aggressive primate reportedly went into shops and drank with residents, but would bite children after too many drinks. Several patients, including a nine-year-old boy, received treatment at Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital in Kathmandu after a surge in ape bites.
