Wildlife at a Welsh beauty spot is being killed in what appear to be deliberate catapult attacks, according to Pembroke Town Council. The council reported that five animals found dead at Pembroke's Mill Pond, near the town's castle, had injuries consistent with being targeted by a catapult.
Council Dismisses Algae Theory
Concerns had been raised that the deaths might be linked to algae levels in the pond. However, the council stated that water quality is not the cause. For seven years, the council has employed Aqua Clear to manage algae growth, reducing algae levels by approximately 45% since the programme began. The pond's water quality remains in good condition.
Investigation Underway
Council representatives retrieved the deceased wildlife after reports from residents. Examination revealed injuries consistent with catapult attacks. The council described the act as "extremely distressing and cruel" and has reported the matter to Wildlife Crime Officers, who are investigating.
The council strongly condemns cruelty towards wildlife and urges anyone with information to report it, anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. It thanked residents for their concern and care for the pond and its wildlife.
