Camusdarach, a stunning beach on Scotland's west coast with views of the Cuillin peaks on the Isle of Skye, has been named the best in Scotland by Time Out. The beach ranked third overall in the UK in Time Out's list of the top ten beaches, published on 25 June 2026.
Camusdarach's Natural Beauty
Unlike single expanses of sand, Camusdarach comprises a series of smaller crescent bays, rocky coves, and hidden inlets. At low tide, these individual pockets merge into a sweeping expanse of silvery-white sand. The beach lies south of the River Morar estuary and offers panoramic views of the Cuillin peaks, the Rum summits, and the sea cliffs of Eigg.
The journey from the car park to the water takes about ten minutes, winding through high sand dunes covered in marram grass. Only at the top do visitors get a full sweeping view of the turquoise sea and the Hebridean islands beyond.
Film and Conservation
Camusdarach gained fame from its appearance in Bill Forsyth's 1983 film Local Hero. The curve of white shell sand, dunes, and bay remain as seen in the film. Beyond the dunes, stabilised by marram and lyme grass, lie stretches of machair grassland, one of Europe's rarest habitats. The beach is also listed by Scottish Natural Heritage as one of Scotland's most beautiful beaches.
Time Out's Verdict
Chiara Wilkinson of Time Out wrote: "I might be biased because I’m born and raised in Scotland, but you really can’t do much better than Camusdarach. This rugged coastline boasts one of the cleanest beaches on the western coast, with a crescent of pillow-soft white sand hugged by clear-blue waters and framed by dramatic, jagged rocks." She noted that while facilities are limited, the nearby town of Morar (eight minutes away) offers cafés, restaurants, and hotels. Further north, Mallaig features The Jacobite steam train from the Harry Potter movies, with dining cars and restored carriages for overnight stays.
