Hedgehogs, often called "the gardener's friend," are welcomed by most gardeners for their natural pest control. To support them this summer, Fareham Borough Council in Hampshire has outlined several ways to entice them into gardens.
Leave Out Food and Water
The council recommends leaving out dry cat or dog food, or specialist hedgehog food. However, fish-based food should be avoided, as hedgehogs have a keen sense of smell and are often deterred by the strong odour of fish. Fish protein also passes through their short digestive system quickly, leading to pungent droppings.
Milk should never be offered, as hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and can suffer severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and dehydration, which can be fatal. Instead, provide a shallow dish of clean water, which "can be a lifeline" during warm weather. Place it near the food source, especially on hot nights or dry periods.
Check Before You Trim or Mow
The council urged thorough inspection of long grass, shrubs, and undergrowth before using garden machinery. Hedgehogs curl into a ball when threatened, leaving them vulnerable to blades and nylon lines, causing severe or fatal injuries. Since they are nocturnal, they sleep in such spots during the day.
Water Plants Wisely
Watering plants keeps soil moist, helping earthworms and insects stay near the surface, providing a food supply for hedgehogs during dry spells. This also reminds gardeners to top up shallow water dishes around the garden.
