Attract doves to your garden in October with one item

Doves can be attracted to visit UK gardens regularly in October by scattering a single key item outdoors. Wild Birds Unlimited, described as "backyard bird feeding experts", says that offering a consistent supply of small seeds is the most effective approach.

What to scatter for doves

To attract doves such as Collared Doves or Woodpigeons, spread food on the ground or use a flat bird table. These birds are particularly fond of small seeds like white millet, which makes an excellent choice. If white millet is difficult to source, sunflower hearts are a suitable alternative.

Only small quantities of food should be put out at a time, ensuring it is consumed quickly. Food left on the ground can attract unwanted pests such as rats, so care is advised.

Which doves visit UK gardens

The Eurasian Collared Dove is the primary true dove species that can be reliably attracted to gardens across the UK. White doves, which are usually white domestic or feral pigeons, may visit if you live near a loft or keep domestic doves. Otherwise, common garden pigeons and pale-coloured wild doves such as the buff-grey Collared Dove are far more frequently seen.

Additional ways to help doves

Providing a shallow, clean bird bath for drinking and bathing can also help safeguard doves. Position the water station in an open location where doves can easily detect approaching cats or predators, and refresh and clean it daily.

Doves are straightforward and untidy nest builders, constructing loose stick platforms in trees or dense shrubs. Allowing hedges, ivy or deciduous trees to grow thick and dense provides natural cover and secure nesting sites.

Maintaining a calm and secure environment is vital. Minimise loud disturbances and excessive activity in feeding zones, and ensure feeding spots are close enough to an escape route such as a tree or substantial shrub to allow quick flight from predators, yet distant enough to prevent cats from launching surprise attacks from concealed cover.

As temperatures drop during autumn, doves often visit gardens in search of additional food sources such as seeds and grains left on tables or scattered on the ground, making October an ideal opportunity to encourage them.
