Rats are highly averse to spicy odours, as their sensitive noses are irritated by them. Cayenne powder, chilli flakes, or chilli oil can cause respiratory irritation, making rodents avoid areas with chilli aroma.
How to Make a Cayenne Pepper Spray
A DIY rat repellent requires one tablespoon of cayenne pepper powder or chilli flakes, one quart (approximately 946ml) of water, and a dash of dish soap. First, combine the chilli with water in a pot and bring to a boil. Allow the mixture to cool; the longer it cools, the more potent it becomes. Then add a dash of dish soap and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture in areas where rats are seen or likely to infest, such as gaps near pipes, drains, roof openings, windows, doors, and damaged air bricks.
Alternative Application and Caution
Alternatively, scatter cayenne pepper or raw chilli flakes around potential entry points. For chilli oil, mix directly with water in a spray bottle and apply where rodents are spotted.
