Moss and algae on patios can be eliminated within days using a common kitchen ingredient, according to Infinite Paving specialists. Baking soda, or bicarbonate of soda, raises the pH level on surfaces, making them inhospitable to these organisms.
How baking soda works
Moss and algae thrive in acidic conditions, but baking soda is alkaline, so it disrupts their environment. It also absorbs moisture, drying out the growth and preventing regrowth. The specialists stated: "One very unconventional yet very effective way of getting rid of unwanted paving weeds is by using bicarbonate of soda."
Step-by-step method
On a sunny day, sweep the patio to loosen dirt and stains. Scatter a generous amount of dry baking soda over moss- or algae-covered areas. Leave it undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours to allow the powder to dry out the growth and increase pH. Additional applications can be made during this period.
When the moss or algae turns brown, it is dying. Once fully dried, brush it away with a broom. Rinse the patio with hot water to leave it clean and blemish-free for longer.
