Two-Ingredient Solution Removes Patio Algae in Five Minutes

Green algae on patios can be removed in as little as five minutes using a homemade solution of white vinegar and orange peel, according to experts. The method offers a natural alternative to harsh chemicals, with the acidic vinegar killing the algae and the orange peel oil acting as a degreaser to strip its waxy coating.

To prepare the solution, orange peel slices should be soaked in white vinegar for approximately seven days, then removed. The infused vinegar is then mixed with warm water in a ratio of one part vinegar to four parts water. This mixture can be sprayed or poured onto the affected area.

Trevor Guilday, a home improvement expert, recommends applying the solution and brushing with short, firm strokes using a hard bristled brush. After allowing it to sit for five to ten minutes, the area should be thoroughly rinsed with clean water. The process can clean a patio in as little as five minutes once the solution is ready.

To prevent algae from returning, experts advise regular sweeping and cleaning. Michael Scott, founder of Lazy Susan Furniture, suggests sweeping weekly and cleaning with soapy water monthly, as well as applying a patio sealer to deter dirt and algae buildup.
