Cleaning enthusiasts on social media have identified a simple, everyday solution that reliably removes grease and water marks from matte kitchen cupboards. According to members of the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, all that is needed is soapy water and a microfibre cloth.
Matte finishes on kitchen cabinets show marks easily, including splashes of food or water, grease stains and fingerprints, and ordinary wiping often fails to make them truly clean. One woman recently posted her dilemma on the Facebook page, sharing a picture of her stained cabinets and asking for help.
Soapy water solution
She wrote: "Help please!!! Anyone got any idea how to get rid of water marks on my matt kitchen cupboards! I read white vinegar diluted with water and then buff out, but this isn't working....I've tried the same spot a few times and still don't work!! They are driving me insane."
Dozens of group members responded with their top tips, and the most popular involved soapy water and a microfibre cloth. One person said: "Soapy water, washing up liquid and warm water, using a microfibre cloth." Another agreed: "I do that! Bowl of soapy water and wipe down matte cupboard with one microfiber cloth then dry it with a second cloth. Works well."
Extra ingredients for tough stains
A third wrote: "Definitely soapy water, then dry with a microfibre cloth." And a fourth raved: "I’ve tried everything, including Purdy & Figg, the only thing that gets close is soapy water and buff off straight away."
For tougher stains, the experts at Kitchen Warehouse UK recommend two natural items: baking soda and white vinegar. They said: "Baking soda is the magic ingredient when it comes to clean matte kitchen cupboards. Mix a small quantity of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda into a smooth paste. Soak a clean cloth in the paste and dab the dirt-affected area of your matt surfaces. Allow the paste to stand for a moment or two, then gently rub the surface. Finish off by rinsing the matt surfaces with clean water and a dry cloth."
