Public to Have Say on South Ayrshire Council Solar Farm Plans

South Ayrshire Council has taken a step forward in its plans to develop a new solar farm at the Auchincruive Bing site in Prestwick. The local authority has announced that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been completed on the site.

The assessment is a key stage in the development of a solar farm which could generate millions of pounds in revenue over the next 25 years.

Site Selection and Environmental Assessment

Auchincruive Bing, located close to Prestwick Airport, has been identified as the ideal site thanks to its 'strong energy‑generation potential, attractive return on investment, and proximity' to several major energy users.

The EIA provides a detailed environmental overview of the site, including tree and bat surveys and a flood‑risk assessment. Findings indicate that the proposed development is unlikely to result in any significant environmental impacts.

Next Steps and Public Consultation

With the EIA now complete, the project will move into the Planning phase. As part of this process, members of the public will be invited to share their views on the proposals. If approved, the solar farm is expected to be operational by 2029.

Councillor Brian Connolly, Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Economy and Strategy Policy Lead, said: “This project is not only set to generate clean energy and reduce South Ayrshire’s carbon emissions, but it will also provide a long‑term revenue stream to support vital council services.”

Councillor Martin Kilbride, Housing and Property Services Policy Lead for the council, added: “Setting up a solar farm is a complex process, and we’re grateful to colleagues at North Ayrshire Council for connecting us with the experts who supported their own project.”
