TikTok binman reveals correct bin for meal deal sandwich packets

A well-known social media refuse collector, dubbed the "UK's no.1 BINfluencer," has shared advice on how to properly dispose of meal deal sandwich packets. In a TikTok video, he clarified that the transparent plastic front of pre-packaged sandwich boxes should not go in the recycling bin; it belongs in the general waste bin.

Cardboard and food waste guidance

He explained that if the cardboard part of the packaging is still clean, it can go in the cardboard recycling bin. However, if it is stained with sandwich filling or other food, it must go in the general waste bin. Any leftover crusts or food should be placed in the food waste bin.

"If you can't separate the two parts of the sandwich packaging, then it just goes in your general waste," he said in the video, adding that the process is "quite simple, really."

Other meal deal items

For meal deals that include pre-packaged biscuits, chocolate bars, or crisp packets, the binman advised placing these in the general waste bin. He noted that some supermarkets offer recycling points for crisp packet packaging.

When it comes to fizzy drinks, empty plastic bottles and cans should go into the plastic recycling bin once finished.

Polystyrene advice

In an earlier TikTok video, the same binman offered guidance on polystyrene. He said: "Polystyrene, my favourite. Make sure to put it in your general waste bin, because so many people get confused and put it in the plastic bin."

He explained that while both are made of plastic, polystyrene is mostly air and not worth recycling in most places. He also warned against putting it in the paper bin, saying: "I know it comes with paper in a box, but still, do not ever put it in your paper bin."

It remains important to check these guidelines with your local council, as recycling rules can differ across the country.
