A DIY specialist has warned that using a fan incorrectly during a heatwave could attract more flies into your home. With temperatures expected to reach 34°C in the UK later this week, many Britons are turning to fans to stay cool, but the way they operate them may be counterproductive.
Why Flies Enter Your Home
Glen Peskett from Saxton Blades Multi Tools explained: "A lot of people think the best thing to do is open every window and stick a fan on full blast. The trouble is, if you've got your windows wide open in the middle of the day, you're making it much easier for flies to find their way inside."
Once inside, flies are attracted by smells from fruit, food, or the bin, especially during a heatwave when odours become stronger. "You're much better off keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, then opening the windows later on once it's actually cooler outside. That's when your fan can really help move the cooler air around the house," Peskett added.
How to Maintain a Cool Home During a Heatwave
To keep temperatures comfortable while preventing flies, experts recommend several measures:
- Keep windows shut during peak daytime heat. Open them early in the morning and in the evening.
- If a window receives direct sunlight, keep curtains drawn.
- Cover all fruit and avoid leaving dirty dishes out.
- Empty the bin regularly and clean up spills on counters.
Peskett noted: "People often think flies just appear out of nowhere. Most of the time they're following food smells. If you can cut those down and avoid leaving your windows open all day, you're much less likely to end up with unwanted visitors."
By making this simple 5-minute adjustment to your fan and window routine, you can enjoy a cooler home without the nuisance of flies.
