North Tyneside Council has confirmed that its Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Wallsend Road in North Shields is open as normal after firefighters attended a blaze this morning.
Fire crews respond to early morning call
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that earlier this morning three fire appliances attended a fire in North Tyneside. The emergency call was received by our Fire Control team at 7.56am and crews from Gosforth and Tynemouth Community Fire Stations were dispatched to premises in North Shields. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus safely extinguish a small waste fire.
“All employees on site had been evacuated from the building prior to the crews’ arrival. Firefighters left the scene at 8.52am.”
Council reassures residents with appointments
Via its Facebook page, North Tyneside Council said: ”If you had an appointment this morning that you weren’t able to make, don’t worry about getting an updated permit. Just come along with your existing permit at a time that suits you, either today or over the next few days.”
The tip made the news recently after the council announced last week that it was temporarily halting intake of fridges and freezers, prompting concerns about fly-tipping. The council was the latest of numerous local authorities across the country to stop accepting fridges and freezers due to a national backlog in processing them.
Fridge and freezer intake resumes
North Tyneside Council announced yesterday, 25 August, that the site was accepting fridges and freezers again as its backlog had been cleared.
