A binman has finally settled the ongoing debate about which bin is correct for takeaway boxes. Many people struggle to determine the proper disposal method for these containers, but a TikTok user known as TheNo1 Binman has provided clarity.
Takeaway boxes belong in general waste
In a recent video, the binman stated that takeaway boxes should not go in the recycling bin. He explained that he is not aware of any council that accepts them for recycling. This includes pizza boxes, which are made of cardboard but become non-recyclable once they are soiled with grease. Therefore, they should be placed in the paper bin only if clean, but typically they end up in general waste.
Check local composting rules
Some councils may allow pizza boxes in compost bins, but it is essential to verify the specific regulations in your area. The binman emphasized that even if you have always put pizza boxes in recycling and they were collected, they likely were not recycled due to contamination.
Burger wrappers and paper bags are also problematic. If the paper bag is clean, it can be recycled; if dirty, it must go in general waste. The same rule applies to kebab boxes and other takeaway containers.
Polystyrene cannot be recycled
Even clean polystyrene takeaway boxes cannot be recycled and must be disposed of in general waste. The binman noted that contamination at recycling facilities prevents many items from being processed, even if they are picked up.
While some commenters disagreed, claiming they have successfully recycled pizza boxes, the binman reiterated that the recycling process is compromised by greasy waste. For accurate disposal, always check your local council guidelines.
