Binman settles debate on recycling crisp packets in home bins
Binman settles crisp packet recycling debate

Crisp packets can be recycled, but not in your household recycling bin, according to a waste specialist with 13 years of experience in the UK waste and recycling sector.

Ashley, who shares content on social media as @theno.1binman, regularly posts videos offering guidance on what to do with waste, particularly around recycling. In a recent video, he addressed common misconceptions about plastic recycling and crisp packets, clarifying the correct way to recycle them.

Soft plastics need dedicated collection points

Ashley explained that soft plastic packaging, including crisp packets and chocolate wrappers, is recyclable but must be taken to dedicated plastic recycling points, typically located outside major supermarkets. He said: "They can be recycled, just not in your recycling bin at home."

He added: "Most supermarkets have them at the exits. You can take them [the soft plastics] there and recycle them but do not recycle them in your household bins."

Risk of bins being rejected

If soft plastics end up in household recycling bins, it can create problems with waste collection services. Ashley clarified: "Don't put them [soft plastics] in your plastic bin because it could get rejected and then you'll have to sort through it all. Exactly the same thing goes for chocolate wrappers."

To ensure bins are emptied as scheduled, residents are advised to familiarise themselves with their local authority's waste collection guidelines, as rules can vary between councils. For those wishing to recycle soft plastics properly, keeping a dedicated bag or container at home to collect them, then taking it along on the next supermarket trip, is recommended.
