A major blaze engulfed part of Streamline PopTop on the Crowther Industrial Estate in Washington, sending black smoke billowing into the sky. The fire broke out yesterday afternoon and continued for more than 12 hours, with crews working through the night.
Large flames and massive plumes of smoke were visible from miles around. Nearby residents reported hearing explosions, and a cordon was put in place as Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service crews battled the fire.
Fire crews remain at scene
This morning, the fire service confirmed the blaze was out and said it hoped to return the building to its owners by lunchtime. A spokesperson said nobody had been hurt and that an aerial ladder platform and a pump remained at the scene.
Northumbria Police also confirmed they attended in a supporting capacity.
Cause under investigation
The cause of the blaze is not yet known. Photographs taken today show the devastating aftermath of the incident at the industrial estate.
