Piles of rubbish have been dumped at a popular South Wales nature spot, with locals describing the mess as "absolutely shocking". The waste at Cefn-Cwrt Reservoir was reportedly discovered on Tuesday, August 25.
Discovery at a popular walking spot
The reservoir is near Jersey Park in Briton Ferry, which includes walking paths, a children's playground and access to Briton Ferry Woods. The area is popular with people enjoying picnics and dog walks.
People who have been walking around Cefn-Cwrt Reservoir have come across bags filled with household waste on the bank of the reservoir. Images from the scene also show two of the bags split open, with large quantities of cans, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and other household items scattered across the grass.
Locals condemn the dumping
One eyewitness said they were "mortified" to find the reservoir in the state that it was in. The incident has sparked anger online, with locals condemning the dumping of waste at the beauty spot.
One person said: "Worst part about this is 90% of that is recyclable so is free to have taken away or even taken to the tip as it's all the same material. Instead they flytip at a beauty spot. Shocking on so many levels."
What is fly-tipping?
Fly-tipping is the illegal deposit of waste onto land or water that does not have a licence to accept it. Waste involved in fly-tipping can include building waste, toxic chemicals, electrical goods and furniture.
People who come across fly-tipped waste are advised not to touch or remove it, as it may contain hazards such as syringes or broken glass. They are also advised not to disturb the site, as evidence could help identify those responsible and may be needed if a case goes to court. People should not approach anyone they see fly-tipping.
Reporting and next steps
Fly-tipping incidents should be reported to the local council. WalesOnline contacted Neath Port Talbot Council about the incident and was advised that the land belongs to Natural Resources Wales.
Natural Resources Wales has been contacted for comment and is still yet to respond.
