A cleaning expert has shared a method for removing mould and mildew from shower grout without scrubbing, using toilet paper and a mould spray. The technique, demonstrated in a TikTok video by user @sisterpledgecleans, reportedly leaves the affected area with around 90% less mould and mildew growth.
How the toilet roll hack works
In the footage, the cleaner sprays the grouting with Astonish's mould and mildew spray before applying toilet paper to the treated area. She explains: "Use this hack to remove mould and mildew from your grouting. Stick toilet roll to the grouting and saturate with product to make it stick. Leave it overnight then remove."
After leaving the product on overnight, she reveals the same section of silicone shows significantly reduced mould and mildew compared to before the process began.
Viewer responses and alternative products
Viewers responded positively to the video, with one commenting: "Love this, thank you." Another shared their own experience: "I used Domestos last night and left it with tissue all night, it worked. I would say 80% it works." A third viewer noted: "I used Domestos bleach and it worked," while another simply replied: "Very good."
The trick has also been discussed on Reddit, where a homeowner on the DIYUK forum posted a photo of mouldy grout and asked for advice on how to remove and prevent it permanently. They mentioned they had tried mould remover, used a squeegee after showering, aired out the bathroom, and ran a dehumidifier regularly.
Recommended application and results
In response, one Reddit user recommended: "The best solution I've found is to get some wet toilet paper, press it up to the affected area and soak it in bleach. Leave it for 24 hours and check it. Won't be perfect and may need a few rounds but it's either that or replace the silicone."
Another person commented: "This 100% Had great results in our bathroom." A third shared: "This might be worth a try before you replace it. I did this in my flat and it killed off all the mould and looked brand new. Just repeated the process about a year later when it started getting bad again. If you have more willpower than I, clean it with a bleach based product more often to prevent future issues."
